 Radio Guide

Frank Presley has broadcast jazz on Australian public radio since 1991, initially from the mud-brick studios of 2BBB Bellingen on the NSW Mid North Coast. One of the longest continuously running jazz programs in Australia, ‘Now’s the Time' had humble beginnings at 2NVR Nambucca Valley Radio in late 1991 and has continued via 2WAY FM Port Macquarie, 2BOB FM Taree and North FM Hornsby over the years. ‘Now’s the Time’ and Northside Radio are now synonymous, with Frank continuing to broadcast from the Northside Radio’s Chatswood, Sydney studios since 2001. Now’s the Time is broadcast from 4pm – 7pm every Tuesday afternoon.

In addition, in 2016 Frank introduced a new jazz program called The New Jazz Standard to Sydney airwaves broadcasting from Fine Music 102.5 every Thursday night at 7pm. The New Jazz Standard is a concept program based on a fresh perspective of modern and alternative music contributing to the standard jazz repertoire. In a jazz context, Frank presents jazz interpretations of music from composers more associated with the world of pop, rock and film but also contemporary jazz composers interpreted by other fine jazz artists.

Frank has interviewed hundreds of artists over the years and you can hear all of Frank’s interviews exclusively on the Interview page on this website. Frank was a presenter of Comradsat’s Australian jazz program “Tempo” in the 1990’s. Frank is currently the editor of the Sydney based jazz e-zine Jazz and Beyond, and a Jazz reviewer for Fine Music Magazine. He was a reviewer for ABC Limelight Magazine from 2007-12, a contributor for Extempore Journal and The Bulletin and in 2006, he was awarded as the winner of the National Jazz Writing Competition at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz for his album and live performance reviews.

"This program is an afternoon of diverse music, both in terms of genre/artist/ and style.
My own musical tastes vary widely, but there are a few musical paths I don't follow. You won't hear opera/dance/grunge/punk/rap/hip hop/gangsta, or any of the more modern urban (read American) takes on the contemporary scene.
I think I probably reflect the tastes of many of my age group, but I know I have many older and considerably younger listeners.
The show exists to promote and publicise Australian music and musicians, and I'm keen to include interviews with them whenever possible.
My personal approach is to expose the listener to high quality selective music that isn't heard on commercial radio, and to provide relevant information about the muso/artist when required. My collection is weighted to the vocal performer, but since becoming part of the station, my exposure to the broad church of "contemporary jazz" has certainly broadened my horizons, and I'm still enormously keen to hear emerging voices, vocally and instrumentally.
Not having a musical background (either by choice or training), I come to this endeavour with a naive enthusiasm for the transformative power of music in all its forms to affect our lives. I can't imagine living without music, and I know there are millions like me."- Sharon Thompson
